About & Join

The Cornish Radio Amateur Club (CRAC) was founded in the 1940′s,  under the name “The West Cornwall Radio Club”. In the late 1950′s he name was changed to “The Cornish Radio and Television Club”; ubsequently becoming The CRAC.

Although there were Radio Rallies and Exhibitions held before 1964, hey were not necessarily annual in nature;however, since that year he Club has organised an unbroken series of Rallies, the latest being hld on Sunday July 11th 2010. Many locations wer used in the early years, followed by many years at what was then Camborne Technical College
and other school venues and latterly, from 1990 onwards the location has been Penair School, Truro. This will again be the venue in 2012.

The annual Rally is always held in July, but in 2005 changed from a Saturday to a Sunday following being lobbied by those who had to work every Saturday.

Membership of the Club is open to anyone with an interest in electronics and/or communication by “wireless”. The club also has a Computer Section which holds separate monthly meetings with information and talks with computer related topics.

Training courses leading to the taking of the three stages pf examination necessary in order to become a licensed radio amateur are also available.

The main Radio Club meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month and the Construction evenings on the third Thursday. The venue for meetings is the former Scool premises at School Lane, Gweal An Top, Redruth, Cornwall our registered examination location remains as the Perranarworthal Church Hall for the time being.

Meetings commence at around 1930 Hrs.

Each month we try to host a talk on an interesting topic, normally radio or computer related but, from time to time of general interest (any volunteers or suggestions for a talk or presenter please let us know). In November the activities includes a bring and buy sale at the meeting with the December evening being  dedicated to an all section Christmas Party with a pasty supper.

The normal format of our meetings is a discussion of Club business, followed by a break for refreshments (tea & coffee) followed by an interesting talk oin many and varied topics, this year to date we have had talks on the Marconi station at Bass,Point ILS Landing Systems, Communications & National Security, the special repair section linked to the RAF, Knot tying (always useful for antenna erection), Antennas by David G3NPB, former Club Chairman, and some chatter sessions
when a speaker has not been available.

The Computer Section meetings were suspended earlier this year as numbers had dropped off considerably with oin occasion only two attendees coming along. This was not financially viable when you consider the cost of room rent and it was decided to amalgamate the two sections with most of us using comouters regularly this was thought to be the most appropriate  solution to the financial drain a separate compuer session was becoming.  You can attend any of these
meetings without having to join first as our guest to see if the Club is right for you for a mazimum of two meetings. We do then expect a subscrioption to be taken out.

For some years the Club has commemorated the birth and achievements of Guglielmo Marconi with a 24 hour event held on the nearest Saturday to his actual date of birth called International Marconi Day. It will be the 25th International Marconi Day (IMD) event on 21st April 2012, quite an achievement I feel and I am  to be associated with the event from its conception to date. For further details of this event and the possible awards please Click Here

As a Club we are always trying to promote our tremendously interesting hobby and to do so The Club also mounts demonstration stations at a variety of local events. In recent times these have included the West of England Steam Society three day show at Stithians, the Redruth and District Model Flying Club’s annual display for the public, demonstration stations for bossum buddies at Gweal An Top and the three dayCornwall Volkswagen Owners Club Jamboree at Stithians.
